A Hot Mess
Day 2 - The Messy Demoniac
“So they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee. As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by demons came out to meet him. For a long time he had been homeless and naked, living in the tombs outside the town.
As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had already commanded the evil[b] spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power.
Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, for he was filled with many demons. The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit.
There's nothing like being greeted by a demon possessed man as you step off the boat onto the shore. Talk about a hot mess... on so many levels. I can't imagine what Jesus must of been feeling, as well as, those who were traveling with him. And I have to wonder even more so about the man. What led him to find himself in such a state? What about the family and friends that knew him once as a different man? Did they visit him from afar? Did they throw notes and stones with messages to remind this man that he was loved? Or was he alone, one of those guys that lives life by himself? None of it's a pretty scene… truly a hot mess. One layer on top of another. But... Jesus isn't afraid to step into the middle of the chaos. Whether it was the man or those who were close to him, Jesus knows the power of his Father's voice and stands on that to see this man totally freed. In a moment ... the hot mess of his darkness fades and light bursts onto the scene.
Amazing. Simply amazing. Such a great reminder that God is in control. No matter the severity of our mess, our God can cut through it all. How dark are some of the hot messes in which you've gotten yourself? Were the people you love around you? Let me encourage you today, as you step off the shore into those scenes, step fearlessly. Call it what it is and call on the name above all names. For in a moment, in a second, something could change. Our world is full of a lot of crazy chaos. Some of them orchestrated by the darkness in this world... but take heart, even a demonic hot mess isn't too much for our Savior. You may not be dealing with demons but there's no doubt, when the time comes, some fear will rise up in your soul. Hold fast to His hand and walk into the mess with determination that our Lord God can deal with it all.
Take a moment to let the name of Jesus cut through the darkness in your life. His name has control over all things...
