Advent - Week 1 // NAMES

NAMES

“So, all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen Generations. And from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.” Matthew 1:17 ESV

Thoughts on Today's Verse: This morning I am reminded of a small, but powerful group of verses in the first chapter of Matthew. It’s the part I usually skip over or read super fast to get to the good stuff. Here, we find the history of Jesus’ familyin verses 1-17. Although we know it’s there, these names listed are easy to forget. Never to be heard from again. Some of them we know, like Old Testament celebrities.  Names like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob…but lest we forget Nahshon, Joram, Eliakim…

Every name. Every family - a part of the lineage of this baby named Jesus. All uniquely important. All a part of how Christ got to this earth for our redemption. Amazing that God chose to use human beings to bring His son onto this earth.

My name. My life. Our name. Our family. Your name. Your life. Important to the heart of our heavenly Father. Important to the heart of God’s plan of redemption on this earth. We have a part to play. God wants to use YOU, your spouse or future spouse and your future family. We may not find our names written in the first chapter of Matthew, but we do find them written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. There, our names shine with purpose and God’s eternal plan. You are on this earth for “such a time as this.” May we continue to live our lives just like Nahshon and his family did. Just like Joram and his family did. Just like Eliakim and his family did. With destiny…

My Prayer: Lord, use my life…my family…my future to make a difference in shining the LIGHT for your Kingdom wherever life leads.
