Her husband Joseph was an honorable man and did not want to disgrace her publicly. So he decided to break the marriage agreement with her secretly. Joseph had this in mind when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said to him, "Joseph, descendant of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She is pregnant by the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 1:19-20 GWT
Thoughts On Today's Verse: Mary... Have you ever really pondered on what it must have been like for her? I mean really... in her day-to-day? Small town girl, teenager, simple life, virtuous, and betrothed to Joseph. But one night, her life changed. An angel, a message, and a baby.
It wasn't long before it was evident that things were changing. Mary could hear the whispers as she couldn't hide the bulge in her body. But, Mary... she was obedient. Her parents sent her to her aunt's house for a while but when she returned it was quite evident that a baby was on the way. Shunned and considered a disgrace, Joseph decides to break off the engagement. But... an angel of The Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him the good news ... That he is to marry her for she is carrying the Savior of the world and to name him Jesus.
It was the year of the census so Joseph and Mary go to the City of David, Bethlehem. They find a stable as there was no room in the Inn. It was there that our Savior was born. Joseph names him Jesus.
I love how Mary was obedient to the point of being shamed ... How she trusted Joseph to lead her ... How she was courageous to have her baby in a stable in a city of strangers (no doc, no meds, no family, no baby showers). Only the Wise Men, whom she had never met before, bring gold, spices and incense... not your usual baby gifts. This was a night of all nights which would certainly make you ponder AND...she didn't have a home. Yes, she was homeless. Our pastor talked about our homeless in the midst of this today that they, too, were born with a purpose but somehow things happened, surprising things, devastating things, not planned things. Just like how nobody knew what Mary knew so they brought shame and whispers of an unwed mom. Everybody has a story. Really makes me think about that night in a whole different way. Truth was born ... and it will set you free!
Prayer: Lord, help me to be obedient no matter the cost. Like Mary, help me to follow your will over my own. Amen!
