Day 15 - GREEDY GRATITUDE

Greedy Gratitude 30 Day Devotional

Day 15 - REST

Father I’m a bit tired, I’m a bit weary. I ask that my soul be rested and grateful in these few moments now that I share with my family around Your Word and around Your Love. Amen.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

- Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

I’m fascinated with the idea and the reality of needed and imperative rest in our lives. I am a high level extrovert; I love the presence of people and being in social settings. I love speaking and spending quality time with those around me. And my wife is a mid level introvert who can do all the social stuff but at some point she needs to be home, in bed with a good book, recharging in silence and solitude. Often times, she is the one who reminds me that I, too, need rest even if it’s the last thing that I feel like I need.

My wife knows that no matter who you are, at some point you need rest, you need to power down, catch some z’s and recharge. And how great is it that God knew we would need that? He, as the creator, could have just had us on 'go' around the clock like a bunch of energizer bunnies; but he knew with all his wisdom and grace that we would need endings and beginnings. It allows us the ability to categorize how we choose to approach the everyday.

I’ve met so many christians who are goers and doers, movers and shakers. They’re always running from place to place doing their best to balance the lifestyle in which they’ve hurled themselves. Now I don’t believe there’s anything inherently wrong with that, but at some point, without a proper amount of rest, you begin to grow weary and you begin to grow tired. Have you ever tried to run a mile on an empty stomach? The feeling is very similar to when you’ve been running on empty and you haven’t noticed it yet.

Did you know that God, really, didn’t create rest for you and I? He didn’t, he created it for Him in us.

Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

- Mark 2:27 NIV

Now I know we hardly ever use the word “Sabbath” anymore, but essentially what it means is a day of rest that we reserve specifically in reverence and thankfulness to our God. He created rest so that we may serve Him better! Do not miss this, because so many of us have!

He loves you so incredibly much and He knows you’re putting in long hours, and you’re meeting with people and loving, and serving, and setting up and tearing down. But He’s begging for you to notice that you cannot run on empty; you need rest so badly to serve him correctly!

His body was broken so yours doesn’t have to be! He doesn’t need anymore broken christians. What I mean by broken is emotionally tapped, burnt out, stressed out, worried, carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders; you and I are not the Messiah; you and I are not Jesus. This world needs Jesus, and the only way the world will see Him is through us. Wouldn’t you want to constantly be wanting to present your best self to the ones you want to reach? Get some rest, because tomorrow is another day; and His grace and mercies are made new with the rising of the sun.

"If today is as bad as it gets, remember that by tomorrow, today will have ended.”

ACTION STEP: Today ask yourself, really ask yourself, “Am I getting the rest that I truly need, not only in my day-to-day but in my relationship with Jesus?” Give thanks to God for granting you the rest you need in order to follow Him correctly. And then get some rest, really get some rest, because you need it.
