“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5, NIV

As humans, we each have a particular internal darkness we deal with. As image-bearers of God himself, we are each filled with a light that stems from the core of our being. On a semi-daily basis, it seems that these two forces are juxtaposed within our souls. This happens in a wide variety of ways. When it boils down to it, there are roadblocks stopping us from achieving and even pursuing our end goals. Our possibilities become limited when the darkness tells us we are not enough. Essentially, we opt to stop believing in ourselves. There is a disconnect somewhere between our spiritual reality in God’s truth and light, versus the harsh reality of earth and life as we know it.

Christ is our light and truth. “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind” John 1:4, NIV. This is the Christian’s true spiritual reality. We have full access to this light that shines in the darkness—his light shining in all darkness. We are the light that shines in the darkness.

A portion of this dichotomy is the unwillingness to fully let go of the little control we have over our life. Controls over our appearance, our living space, our family members, our work, our money, and most of all, our overall brand reflected to others watching us live life. We hold onto the little grasp we have, swearing up and down that we are entitled to these controls. It’s our life…

When Christ chose us, and we in turn chose Christ, we willingly released our power and gave ourselves up for his sake. In order to gain life, we must lose it. It’s a backwards effect, if you will. We relinquish control, and freedom follows. Letting go leads to a lightening of the soul, which in turn intensifies the light living within us.

We need to let go of our earthly mindsets, and engage in a heavenly one. We need to step back from our negative self-images, and take a look through Christ’s eyes. We need to set aside judgments and measures, and focus on the truth of the cross covering all failures. God is not keeping any sort of score. Life is not a test with an answer key. Rather, there is an image of our minds lending itself to darkness while God whispers truth into our ear. He reaches out a gentle hand to guide us forward and further into his light. He is near, lightly placing his hand on our backs, begging us to just take a brief moment and look in his direction. He aims to clear our thoughts and override the fears with his perfect love. Let us open up our hardened hearts to his warm ways.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. That’s the beauty of a single light. No matter how dim, it overrides the night surrounding it. And the brighter and stronger that light becomes, more darkness is overridden.

LORD, help us to give up our control. Allow us to blossom in your love. Speak your truths above the lies we have fallen into. Overcome the dark corners in our hearts. Make your home in us. Fill us with your light. Override our unbelieving hearts and lead us to a place of freedom. We know that your light over-rules any darkness, and we speak that truth into our lives.
